Cape Fear Report 4/22/10

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Speckled trout are coming around finally. We’ve had several reports of small fish caught, but there has been some decent sized fish around. Topwater bite is starting to kick off in the afternoon’s or mornings. Water temps has been in the low 60’s in the morning then warming up to close to 70 in the shallow bays and creeks. Shrimp lures such as D.O.A. and Halo Shrimp have had good production this week. Allot of reports are coming from up the river fishing the incoming tide around the rock islands and Town Creek.

Spanish mackerel are starting to make the run up here. I heard of some nice fish caught today at High Rock and the Peterhoff. Bluefish are also out there in massive numbers and are being a constant nuisance. The Spanish are being caught either trolling or drifting. Drifting you can throw Maria Jigs, Diamond Jigs, Gotcha Plugs and Large Sabiki Rigs with a Stingsilver as the weight. If you troll then you can use Yozuri Deep Divers, or Clarkspoons on plainers. Either way will get the job one.

No word on the Atlantic Bonita. Flounder are still running small with a few keepers here and there being caught live mud minnows or menhaden.

Surf fishing is producing flounder on live mud minnows. Whiting, black drum, and sheepshead are being caught on live sandfleas. Bluefish are also hitting anything that moves right now. Mainly just snapper size blues being caught so far. I heard that there is some big chopper blues at Myrtle Beach.

False albecore are 4 to 5 miles out can be caught on topwater poppers, Diamond jigs, Maria jigs, and Jig Fish’s.

I had a good report for king mackerel being about 40 miles out. Still pretty far out, but dead cigar minnows rigs or spoons will a box full.

Stream reports were mainly wahoo at the Same Ole. Farther out to the break there were massive schools of blackfin tuna. Mike King’s crew boated several limits of blackfin tuna. They also some mystery tuna of some sort with scales and a few yellowfin tuna. Jiggers also caught cobia, African pompano, snowies, tilefish, blackfin tuna, and of course too many aj’s. Eastern Tackle jigs in pot roast and burnt orange have been highly sought after along with Roscoe Jigs. Thats it for this week. Fishing is getting better and better.

Whiting are on the move

A few whiting are being caught in the surf along with small flounder around the piers.  Its going to be a good day today and Saturday, up in the 80’s. Cooling some on Sunday when the front comes through.  This week should be the last of the cool days until Oct.  So, get out the gear and catch some fish.

Specs are moving

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Specs are being caught around the islands in the river.  That is a good sign of better days ahead.  The weather has been great.  Try MirrOlure or live shrimp.

Gulf Stream Heating Up

Monday, April 5th, 2010

The water is still a little cool for trolling but they have been catching some Tuna and Wahoo on Blue Water Candy’s Roscoe Jigs.  That seems to be the bait of choice for now.  You can also keep Beeliners, so get your jigs out of the closet and go fishing.

Perfect Weather

Monday, April 5th, 2010

The weather over the holiday has been perfect.  If you were not here you missed out.  A few Bull Reds are being caught on the South End in the surf and some small flounder.  Sand Fleas are back so the Virginia Mullet are not far behind.
